2011 In Review

2011 was not a very good year for me creatively. In review I hated (not just disliked, but hated) about half of what I shot. I felt frustrated and restricted by my financial limitations as far as props,wardrobe and equipment were concerned, and it was by far the worst year for spoiled, prima donna, bratty, inconsiderate models. Strangely it was also the year I experienced the most models misleading me about their age/weight/experience. Thankfully I have my collection of wonderful, creative and inspiring models that kept me going through it all.
Near the end of the summer I made a definitive decision to stop shooting people , perhaps turn my lens to other things if inspired to do so. I also had to trade in my Canon EOS 1Ds which I loved, for something lighter since it was more or less deteriorating the right side of my body. I am glad all the pain is gone, but I miss that camera. So far I haven’t been inspired to shoot much but I’m hoping that will change once the new year starts. I also have a tall willowy daughter that I can drag along if I really need a human in the shot.

I am greatly looking forward to 2012. It is time for renewal, time to leave all the awfulness of 2011 behind and explore new avenues as well as focus on forgotten and neglected goals.

Shot on the Broadway Bridge in Portland, OR. This was actually shot in the daytime near rush hour, so we had to wait for the 30 second lull in between traffic lights to shoot around all the cars. It was a very workable rhythm, I was surprised how easy it was.

Spent some time running around a farm after a frozen fog morning. Friendly cows abound.

Honey

In 2008 I moved into a studio space that was an old converted warehouse about two steps away from being condemned. It was HUGE, there were various wonderful textures, rotten wood, stone, concrete, windows, and a whole hell of a lot of dead pigeons. Thankfully, there was also a shower. Otherwise this shoot would have been impossible. The model was painted with gold body paint and then covered in honey. To say this was a mess does not begin to describe. According to her is also felt disgusting. The results were amazing though!

This was shot in front of a warehouse window that was covered with a plastic drop cloth. The model was standing rather precariously on stacked cinder blocks that we found, with a fan blowing “up her skirt” to give the fabric motion. Circa 2007.
